DHAKA: The expansion of the network of government-operated mobile-phone company Teletalk has been stalled for three months for want of power.
A total of 116 Based on Transfer and Receiver Stations (BTS) were built across the country but it was not possible to run them for lack of power supply.
The company is not getting any benefit in spite of having invested a huge amount of money. The machinery could get scratched for lying long unused, said one official.
Mujibur Rahman, Managing Director of Teletalk, said a letter was sent to the power secretary last week for power connection to the 116 BTS.
Earlier, the government decided that the new power connections would not be provided over the next three months.
He said Teletalk is spreading its wings for giving latest service according to the government`s aim of building `Digital Bangladesh`.
According to the letter Teletalk is working from the very beginning to build `Digital Bangladesh` for realizing the ruling government`s vision.
The company is working for social and welfare activities alongside giving mobile service.
"We have already provided services, including SSC/HSC results, admission information in public and private universities," he added.
Shah Alam, General Manager (System Engineer) of Teletalk, said the countrymen are not benefited through the BTS towers for want of power connection.
“If it goes on like this, the company will incur a huge loss,” he added.
Teletalk officials said the locations of the newly constructed towers are 3 in Bandarban, 1 in Barisal. 3 in Bhola, 2 in Bogra, 1 in Chandpu, 1 in Chaipainawabganj, 7 in Chittagong, 2 in Chuadanga, 3 in Comilla, 28 in Dhaka, 2 in Dinajpur, 2 in Khulna, 1 in Faridpur, 3 in Gazipur, 1 in Tangail, 1 in Jamalpur, 5 in Jessore, 2 in Jhalakathi, 1 in Jhenidah, 1 in Joypurhat, 14 in Khagrachhari, 3 in Kurigram, 5 in Lalmonirhat, 1 in Madaripur, 1 in Magura, 2 in Munshiganj, 1 in Naogaon, 1 in Narail, 2 in Narayanganj, 2 in Narsingdi, 1 in Natore, 1 in Rajshahi, 5 in Rangamati, 1 in Rangpur, 1 in Satkhira, 2 in Sirajganj and 3 in Sylhet.
