Conflicting politics bar to remove problem: WB

DHAKA: World Bank (WB) country director to Bangladesh Johannes Zutt remarked that conflicting politics is the main barrier of removing the country’s various problems.

He came up with the observation while addressing a view exchange meeting on ‘poverty alleviation and growth rate increase: a priority’ with media at WB office in city’s Agargaon area on Monday.

Zutt said bureaucratic complexity is main problem for economic growth and investment and it should be removed.

He said Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Bangladesh has improved and it would be increasing day by day.

If the increase remains steady the country would be economically developed, he added.

The WB high official also observed that developing power sector is one of the main challenges for Bangladesh.

The development will be disrupted if the government cannot ensure the uncut power supply in industrial areas.

The communications system should also be improved for the development.

In response to a query on whether the WB will give loan in the much-talked-about Padma Bridge Project, Zatt said they have no plan about the matter.

Replying another query about the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) report that they did not find any guilty in the accused people, the country director said Bangladesh is an independent country and its judiciary is also free. So, they have no comment about the ACC report.
