Seminar on violence against women starts Tuesday

DHAKA: A 3-day-ling Seminar for Asia-Pacific parliaments on “Ending the cycle of violence against girls in Asia-Pacific” will start from September 23 at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the city.
 
The seminar will be jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Parliament of Bangladesh.

The meeting will focus on violence against girls and discuss an effective parliamentary response in terms of legislation and enforcement.

Members of parliament will be provided with up-to-date information on the situation in the Asia-Pacific region and special emphasis will be placed on the three most prevalent forms of violence against girls in the region - early marriage, sexual violence and domestic violence.

The Seminar will serve as a forum for exchanging experiences and know-how. It will also enable participants to develop strategies and actions to effectively end violence against girls in the region.

Jatiya Sangsad speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will inaugurate the seminar.

Parliament Secretariat sources said that members and staff of the members of parliaments of 37 states of Asia and Pacific region. Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Japan, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam. Pacific: Australia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Federated States of), Nauru, New Zealand, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu,

Besides, delegates from various international organizations will also join in the seminar.
