DHAKA: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members detained a police constable of Dhaka Metropolitan Police for his alleged connection to abducting a businessman and taking ransoms.
RAB nabbed the cop, Jahangir who is on duty in DMP’s protective unit, in front of BEXIMCO Pharmaceuticals Limited in Dhanmondi area on Saturday noon and seized several blank cheques from his possession.
RAB-2 operation officer Maruf Hossain confirmed the matter to banglanews on Saturday night. RAB also held a press conference about the detention at the night.
Maruf told banglanews that UK expatriate Sweety lent a total of Tk 65 lakh to businessman Mannan. Later, Mannan began lingering over paying the money. At one stage, the women somehow reached to the constable who assured her of getting back the money from Mannan.
On Monday, Jahangir picked up Mannan in front of Prime Bank, Kawran Bazar branch and roamed around the city awhile. Later the police constable went to Jahangir’s house and took several back cheques.
The officer said that the constable withdrew some Tk. 1.5 lakh through cheque from BRAC Bank and later released the businessmen.
Two others policemen are also involved in the incidence and RAB have requested police administration to take measures on the matter, added Maruf.
