DHAKA: The High Court on Thursday sentenced SOM Kalim Ullah, former managing director (MD) of state-owned Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL), to four months’ imprisonment on charge of contempt of court.
An HC bench comprising Justice MR Hasan passed the order. The court also fined him Tk 100,000, in default, to suffer one month more imprisonment.
Sources said a private telecom company had deposited Tk 1.40 crore in favour of the BTCL as bank guaranty. Later, the telephone company claimed its Tk 60,000 from BTCL but it did not respond to it.
Later, the HC passed an order favoring the company in response to a petition regarding the matter.
But BTCL again refused to release the money despite HC order.
Being informed about the violation of court order, the HC issued a contempt of court rule against BTCL.
Then, the court Thursday delivered final verdict of contempt of court rule and awarded to four months’ imprisonment to the former managing director of BTCL and fined TK1,000,00. In default, he has to serve another month imprisonment.
Lawyer Rois Uddin Ahmed moved for the ex-BTCL MD while Barrister Anik R Haque stood for the plaintiff during the hearing at the court.
