GAZIPUR: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said the government will set-up two training centres in Rajshahi and Chittagong for the jailers to make them more efficient.
She made the pledge while addressing the inauguration ceremony of ‘Jatiya Kara Saptah-2014’ at Kara Campus Parade Ground in Kashimpur of Gazipur in the morning.
She further said though the jails were introduced to punish the criminals but the modern world considers it as a reformatory and rehabilitation centre.
The premier also said her government has taken many steps to develop the environment in jails as it is conducting administrative actions with the principle of ‘hating crimes not criminals’.
She also said incumbent government has ensured safe drinking water and healthy living environment in the jails.
Ruling Awami League president Sheikh Hasina also said her government established ‘Kara Smriti Jadughar (Jail Memory Museum)’ of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders—Tajuddin Ahmed, Syed Nazrul Islam, Captain (Rtd.) M Mansur Ali and A H M Quamruzzaman—in 2009.
The museum will be opened to all after shifting the central jail to Keraniganj so that people can get over all information about their days in jail.
She also said the renovation of old and decrepit jail buildings of Khulna and Sylhet have already started. Besides, we have opened new jails in Brahmanbaria, Jhenaidah, Chandpur, Meherpur, Gopanganj, Natore, Nilphamari and Netrokona.
She further said the government has built dwelling places for the female jailers of several jails and opened day-care centre at Dhaka and Chittagong central jails and Kashimpur Central Women’s Jail.
Sheikh Hasina also said, “We will modernise the jails so that no criminal can continue their criminal or extremist acts staying inside the jails.”
“We have adopted several steps including increasing the prisoners’ efficiency in works so that they can lead a normal life after the completion of their term in the jail,” she added.
The premier also put emphasis on developing a “criminal database”, coordinating it with the information of National ID Card and Passport Office, to bring the law and order situation of the country under control.
Praising the jailers for their role in reforming and rehabilitating the prisoners, Sheikh Hasina said, “You need to ensure so that no petty thugs can turn into a top terror after entering here.”
She added that the prisoners have to be considered as a member of the society. Society will be more lawless if a member of society turns into a criminal for the environment of the jail.
She also recounted some of the successes during her regime.
