DHAKA: War criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman will file a petition with the Supreme Court seeking a review of its verdict that upheld death penalty for the convict.

His lawyer Advocate Tajul Islam made the disclosure after meeting him in jail on Wednesday noon.

Tajul Islam said, “We are ready to file the review petition Thursday and hope Kamaruzzaman will get same privileges like other cases of Appellate Division.”

Earlier in the morning, five defense lawyers met Kamaruzzaman in Central Jail and talked about the review petition.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 issued death warrant for Kamaruzzaman on February 19 after the apex court released full text of the verdict.

The tribunal sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death on May 9, 2013, for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. Five out of seven charges were proved by the prosecution in the case.

Kamaruzzaman appealed against the judgment after a month.

The Apex Court handed down capital punishment to Kamaruzzaman for the massacre of Sherpur’s Sohagpur village, which has come to be widely known as “Bidhoba Palli,” or the village of widows, following a mass killing in 1971.
