PM receives Women in Parliaments Award

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received Women in Parliaments Global Forum Award as recognition of Bangladesh’s leading role in reducing gender inequality in South and South-East Asian politics.

State Minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam handed over the medal to the Prime Minister at a weekly cabinet meeting on Monday.

Earlier on March 25, the award was presented by WIP Global Forum at annual summit held in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the state Minister of had received the award.

Prime Minister’s press secretary AKM Shamim Chowdhury informed the matter to reporters.

Bangladesh is only country in the world where the Prime Minister, Parliament speaker, Leader of the Opposition, Deputy Leader of the house, and a major opposition leader are all women.

WIP Award is based on the rankings of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report.

The report assesses 135 countries that represent more than 93 percent of the world’s population.

It also assesses on how well resources and opportunities are divided among male and female populations.

Women in Parliaments (WIP) is the global network of female parliamentarians at the national level and has around 9,000 female parliamentarians in its network.

The Women in Parliaments Global Forum (WIP) is the global network of female Parliamentarians at national level, including the European Parliament, of whom there currently are around 9000.
