GAZIPUR: Garment workers blockaded the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway and vandalized vehicles in a violent protest after a fellow worker was killed in a road accident on Wednesday morning.

Police said Sujan Mia, 30, knitting operator of World Fashion garment factory, was run over by a bus in Borobari Targachh area under Sadar upazila while returning home after offering Fazr prayers.

“As the death news spread, Sujan’s colleagues took to the street at about 8:30am and damaged a number of vehicles,” says a firsthand account of the unrest.

The protestors also put barricades on the highway, disrupting communications on the busy route for half an hour.

Police brought the situation under control at about 9am .
