Crack at Sundarban’s boundary wall

DHAKA: A crack was found at the northwest boundary wall of Sundarban Hotel Saturday following Wednesday’s collapse of its northeast boundary wall and basement adjacent to the construction site of the National Bank Tower.

Officials concerned and experts expressed their helplessness saying that it is not possible to take action at this moment to reduce the risk of west side of the hotel.

After the incident, Care Bangladesh, garage of Progati Insurance Company and High-Touch Furniture Market, adjacent to west side  of Sundarban Hotel, remained closed for fear of further collapse, told officials concerned to banglanews during a spot visit.

Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayed Khokon said road of the both sides are slight risk-free now. But, west side of under construction building is still risky.

BUET civil engineering department professor and structural foundation expert Syed Fakhrul Amin was present in the spot during the time.

When asked, he told banglanews that the risk of the western part of the Sundarban Hotel is slightly higher. As there is no entry of the truck on the street, the western side will be filled with the sand from opposite side. There is no alternative.

DSCC Chief Executive Engineer Habibur Rahman said as cracks were found in the walls there are some risks. However, we cannot take any action immediately as there is no way to entry the western side.

Around 40000 trucks of sand have already been poured to fill up the site and save the hotel temporarily. Besides, the authorities concerned have taken initiative to pour more 4000 trucks of sand in northeast side of the road.

A boundary wall and part of the Sundarban Hotel’s basement along with the adjacent road caved in into the construction site of the National Bank Tower on Wednesday.

The collapse of part of a bordering lane of the under-construction building took with itself the nearby road and parts of the Sundarban Hotel’s boundary wall and its basement.
