GAZIPUR: Despite frantic efforts of fire fighters for several hours, the fire that broke out at the ‘Dignity Textile Mill Limited’ in Masterbari area under Sreepur Upazila on Sunday noon was yet to be completely doused.
Some floors of the ninth-storied building, made of steel, collapsed due to heat caused by the fire.
On information, some 18 units of fire fighting team of Dhaka, Joydebpur, Sreepur, Tongi and Bhaluka rushed to the spot and carried out overnight struggle to bring the flame under control.
Around 8:00am Monday, Gazipur Fire Service deputy assistant director Aktaruzzaman Liton told banglanews that the third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the building collapsed.
The people were evacuated from the area at midnight fearing of building collapse. Some people sustained minor injuries but none was reportedly killed in the fire incident, he added.
Gazipur fire service sources and workers of the factory said the fire originated at godown of the second floor of the factory around 2:00pm. None was seriously injured as all workers and officers of the factory were in outside the building for lunch-break.
Liton said the supply water could not stay in the floors as the building is made of steel frame that hampers the firefighters’ operation.
However, the loss of the fire could not be estimated and the cause of the fire also unknown yet. But the fire service members suspected that the fire might be originated from electric short circuit.
Administrative manager of the factory Nazmunnahar Kemu told banglanews that the fire is yet to be put out and all furniture and materials burnt to ashes in the fire.
A five-member probe committee has already been formed by local administration to point out the reason of the fire.
