US trade envoy Delaney due on Saturday

DHAKA: Assistant US Trade Representative Michael J Delaney will arrive in Dhaka on September 19 to discuss the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) related issues.

A four-member team, led-by J Delaney, who is assigned for south and central Asia, will stay in the country between September 19 and 23, said a USTR press release on Thursday.

The other delegation members include -- Director for Labor Affairs of Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) Michael O’Donovan, Office Director, Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) of US Department of State Bruce Levine and International Relations Officer of International Labor Affairs Bureau (ILAB) of US Department of Labor (USDOL) Jennifer Goodyear.

During their visit, the delegation will meet government officials, employers, workers, trade union members, International Labor Organization, the Alliance on Bangladesh Worker Safety, the Accord for Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, and other organizations concerned.

The delegation seeks to learn more about the efforts by Bangladesh government and other Bangladeshi actors in support of the Sustainability Compact and the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Action Plan.

The team will assess progress made and areas for future progress to help ensure a successful Sustainability Compact review meeting in Dhaka in November with the European Union, the International Labor Organization, the United States, and Bangladesh government.

They are set to visit Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA) and meet representatives from shrimp processing sector and other local organizations.
