1 killed in ‘gunfight’ with police

MEHERPUR: A man was killed in reported gunfight between his cohorts and police in Swashanghat area under Sadar upazila of the district early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Ramzan Sheikh, 42, son of late Amir Sheikh of Rajnagar village of the upazila.

Police the gunfight ensued 2:30am when a team of police along with Ramzan went to Swashanghat area to recover firearms, leaving five people, including four police officials, injured.

Later, Ramzan was rushed to Meherpur General Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead.

The injured police officials are Sadar Thana sub-inspector (SI) Mejbahul, Constables Shahen, Minhaj and Ashraful.

Police also recovered a LG shutter gun, two rounds of bullets and some locally made arms from the spot, Mehepur Sadar Thana OC Ahsan Habib told banglanews.

He also said police arrested Ramzan, accused in several cases, from his house around 8:30pm Sunday.
