MUNSHIGANJ/MADARIPUR: A Ro-Ro ferry ran aground for a second time on the Mawa-Kaorakandi route for loss of navigability in the river Padma, leaving 600 people and 34 vehicles stranded since late Friday night.

BIWTC Mawa office manager (trade) Sirajul Islam told banglanews24.com.bd that the Shah Makhdum ferry vessel got stuck-up on a shoal around 01:00am near Kawliachar-Hazra channel.

Master-in-charge Abdul Manna told banglanews24.com.bd that the ferry ran onto the big sandbar for not fixing the guideline marking off the passage properly.

“Two rescue ships are already on the spot to rescue the ferry,” Mannan said.

Earlier at 8:00 am Friday, the MV Shah Makhdum ran aground in the same channel and was immediately rescued.

Meanwhile, another Ro-Ro (roll-on, roll-off) ferry named after Language Martyr Barkat was rescued early Saturday following a 22-hour try. The Barkat went aground Friday at about 7:30 am in the Kawliachar-Hazra channel, four kilometres from Mawa.
