World AIDS Day being marked

DHAKA: The World Aids Day is being observed across the country as elsewhere in the world on Tuesday.

The theme of this year’s World Aids Day is “Getting to zero; end Aids by 2030”.

Health and family welfare ministry as well as different socio-cultural organizations have chalked out elaborate programs to observe the day in a befitting manner.

A rally was brought out from in front of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the morning.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the day.

They called for intensified AIDS awareness in the country.

According to a latest global report by UNAIDS, the number of people on life-saving antiretroviral drugs has doubled since 2010, while incidents of new cases have fallen by 35 percent since 2000.

In June, about 15.8 million people out of a total of 37 million people living with HIV were taking the drugs.

“The Millennium Development Goal of reversing the HIV epidemic was reached ahead of the 2015 deadline - an incredible achievement that testifies to the power of national action and international solidarity,” WHO director general Margaret Chan said.
