MAWA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday categorically said they had started the construction work of Padma multipurpose bridge after forming government in 2009.
According to her, the World Bank (WB) also extended its hand to support the government in the work.
“Later, I announced that we will construct the Padma Bridge with our own money as the World Bank had withdrawn itself from the project raising a baseless allegation of bribe-taking conspiracy”, the PM said.
“Now, we have started the construction work. It is no more a dream,” she added.
The premier made the assertion while addressing a rally at Khanbari area under Lohajang upazila of Munshiganj district on Saturday afternoon.
She joined the rally after inaugurating the river training and piling work of main structure of the 6.15 km Padma multipurpose bridge, the biggest one in Bangladesh.
District Awami League president Mohammad Mohiuddin chaired the rally.
Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, industries minister Amir Hossain Amu, agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury, food minister Quamrul Islam, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, PM’s economic affairs adviser Dr Mashiur Rahman, AL presidium member Nuh-Ul-Alam Lenin, joint general secretaries Dr Dipu Moni and Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, among others, addressed the rally.
