Nation commemorating martyred intellectuals

FROM RAYER BAZAR BODDHO BHUMI: Thousands of people from all strata of life flooded into the Martyred Intellectuals’ Memorial at Mirpur in the capital to pay tributes to Martyred Intellectuals on Intellectuals’ Day on Monday.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to the martyred intellectuals by placing a wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Memorial at Mirpur in the capital marking the Martyred Intellectuals’ Day on Monday.

The President placed wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at 8:01am and then PM Hasina pay homage at 8:03am.

Later, they both stood in solemn silence for some time to show respect to the memories of the intellectuals when bugle was played last post.

Flanked by central leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, laid another wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial as the party chief.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, accompanied by senior leaders of the party,  placed wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial after 10:00am.

Shipping minister Shahjahan Khan, Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Mohammad Ershad, Dhaka University (DU) AAMS Arefin Siddique have already paid their tributes to martyred intellectuals.

Besides, representatives from Jatiya Shilpakala Academy, Lalmatia Mahila College, Dhaka Uddyan Government College placed wreaths at the  Martyred Intellectuals’  Memorial.

Senior Awami League leaders, senior officials and leaders of the front organisations of the party, senior leaders of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal also paid tributes to martyred intellectuals.

On  December 14in 1971, two day ahead of the nation’s freedom, Pakistani occupation forces aided by their local collaborators brutally killed over 200 Bangalee intellectuals including professors, journalists, doctors, artistes, engineers, and writers with an evil motive to make the Bengali nation merit less.
