BAGERHAT: Ringleader of a gang of sea robbers was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with a combined force of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-8 and Detective Branch (DB) of police at Panirghat area of Sharankhola Range of the Sunderbans on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Sagir Bhandari, 35, leader of Nayan Bahini and hailed from Panjakaran area under Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat district.
RAB-6 assistant director Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid told banglanews that a combined force of RAB-8 and DB police conducted a drive in the area.
He further said, “Sensing their presence in the area, sea robbers opened firing to them around 7:30am. The law enforcers also opened fire for self-defence, leaving Sagir Bhandari bullet-hit in the area”.
The combined force seized five locally-made firearms and seven rounds of bullets from the area, he added.
Later, Sagir Bhandari was taken to Sharankhola Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries, said Sharankhola Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Shah Alam Farazi.
