DHAKA: The Christian community in Bangladesh and all around the world are celebrating holy Christmas, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, on December 25 with festivity and religious fervor.
Also called ‘Boro Din’ in Bangla, the day is being celebrated by decorating Christmas trees both at home and religious places.
The performance of Santa Claus, presentation of carol music, cutting cakes and arranging special feasts are also integral parts of the festivity.
The celebration started on the eve of the day as churches have been decorated with lights and glittery ornaments across the country.
Christian community has started visiting churches and attending special services there from the early hours of the day.
Christmas brings great joy to people of all ages, especially for Children, who wait for Santa Claus to come and distribute gifts.
President M Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Rowshan Ershad issued separate messages greeting the Christians of the country on the eve of the day and calling for upholding the tradition of religious harmony in the country.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private television channels are broadcasting special programs marking the day.
Special security arrangements have been taken in churches and Christian areas across the country with deployment of law enforcers in large numbers.
All the churches have been brought under the CCTV (closed circuit camera television), metal detector and archway coverage.
Plain clothes police personnel along with uniformed ones have also been working to avert any untoward situation.
Moreover, check posts have been set up at the strategic points across the country to ensure security.
