DHAKA: Production in the country’s lone offshore gas field Sangu came to a grinding halt Tuesday for technical breakdown, officials said.

“The production in the field halted for problems in the generator that powers the mining field,” chairman of Petrobangla Prof Hossain Mansur said.

Earlier, the Bangura gas field of Tallow was shut down on June 6 for technical glitch.

Hossain Mansur told banglanews24.com.bd that the field is powered by three generators that are remote-controlled with one of these in operation at a time.

“One of the generators suddenly tripped at around 7pm. The one for backup also went down as soon as it started, for reasons not known,” he said.

They could not switch the third one on for inclement weather.

“The sea seems to be very rough and repair would not be possible. We will have to wait till Wednesday,” said a top official.

Sangu produces 35 million cubic feet of gas a day, hugely contributing to the fuel supply across the country through the national gas grid.

Shell and Cairn Energy discovered Sangu field in 1998 off the Chittagong coast of the Bay of Bengal.
