Dhaka: Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun Wednesday expressed apprehension that the main opposition party could create an anarchic situation ahead of their June 27 hartal.

“The government has ordered law enforcers to be on the alert for tackling any type of anarchy,” she said, as an uneasy calm prevails in the political arena due to a latest government-opposition standoff.

The worry came from a regular meeting in the presence of high officials of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), all MPs of Dhaka and OCs of 41 Thanas in the city on law-and-order situation of Dhaka metropolitan area in the conference room of the Home Ministry.

Addressing the meeting, State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam
noted that opposition BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has recently given a threat to the administration and law enforcers. “We are not frightened,” he said.

State Minister for Home Affairs Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku said BNP has called hartal to foil the trial of war criminals. “All possible steps will be taken to keep the law-and-order situation normal.”

Most of the MPs demanded ensuring uninterrupted power supply during the screening World Cup soccer matches—as outages already have triggered outrages.

From the meeting, the authorities concerned were directed to take measures so that the extremists could not continue their activities by renting any houses.
