DHAKA: Country’s women leaders Thursday lamented that equal rights of women in Bangladesh still remained elusive, although both government and opposition sides are led by two ladies.

They say women, especially in rural areas, are deprived of all sorts of rights.

Addressing a commemorative lecture in observance of the 8th death anniversary of renowned women’s leader Dr Nilima Ibrahim, they castigated fundamentalist forces for keeping the womenfolk far from development.

Bangladesh Mahila Samity organized the lecture at its office auditorium in the city, where Prof. Latifa Akand delivered the lecture on ‘Equal rights-Beijing Platform for Action context to Bangladesh women leadership’.

Salma Khan, president of Women for Women, Barrister Rabeya Bhuiyan, Khusi Kabir, Coordinator of Nijera Kori, and Kanij Mahmuda Akhter, principal of Siddeswari Girls College, spoke at the function with Mahila Samity president Sitara Ahsanullah in the chair.
