DHAKA: Garment workers under the banner of a federation will march on parliament on June 24 to press their demands that boil down to one: higher pay and perks.

National Garment Workers Federation Friday announced the fresh programme of ‘road march’ on their demands for budgetary allocation to fulfill their five demands.

The workers would hold the long march towards parliament from Muktangon at 4 pm on June 24, said the Federation president, Amirul Haque Amin, after a token sit-in at Muktangon Friday.

Their five-point demands include safe maternity centre, daycare centre, workers dormitory, transportation and rationing system.   

They also reiterated their demand for fixing Tk 5000 as minimum wages for the apparel workers.   

President of the coalition of 10 garment workers’ organizations, he also said, “We have already submitted our demands to the ministries concerned, including Finance Ministry, and hope that the government will weigh our demands.”

General Secretary of Bangladesh Workers Party Anisur Rahman Mallik, Central Convener of Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad Dr. Wajedul Islam Khan and Politburo Member of Bangladesh Workers Party Comrade Quamrul Ahsan also addressed the squatters.
