DHAKA: Aggrieved bharatias Friday forwarded a 16-point charter of demands, including introduction of monthly rent memo, cessation of taking advance money as security deposit and an amended regulation controlling house-rent.

Leaders of Jatiya Bharatia Parishad came up with the demands at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity and said they would go for movement to realize those.

President of the Parishad Dr. Jalal Ahmed said, “Though tax on house (holding tax) has not been increased, owners of the houses are increasing rents every year showing essentials’ price hike as the excuse.”

Law secretary of the tenants’ organization Advocate Mostafa Zaman said the House Rent Control Act 1991 does not allow the house-owner to increase rent more than 15 percent of the government-determined rate and to take advance money as security deposit.

“The law of 1964 envisages providing money receipt while receiving rent, but the house-owners are very much reluctant to follow the rules,” he alleged.
