BAGERHAT: Railway minister Nurul Islam Sujon said that train communication on the Khulna-Mongla route will be opened by 2022.
The government is constructing rail line from Khulna to Mongla in order to increase the capacity of the sea port.
The minister said this in the meeting with the Railway Division and the Ports Authority at the Rest House ‘Parijat’ in Mongla port on Thursday (July 4).
He also said that the goods of Mongla port will be transported through the Khulna-Mongla railway route. Apart from this, the railway link will be directly connected with the Siliguri of India via Banglabandha-Panchangarh, the northern part of Bangladesh.
Through this, rail connectivity with India, Nepal and Bhutan will increase. This will increase the users of Mongla port, he added.
Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khalek, Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Mamunur Rashid, Mongla Port Authority Acting Officer Afsana Yasmin, Executive Engineer of Railway Project Abdur Rahim, Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rahat Mannan and senior officials of the local administration were also present.
Later, the minister visited the Mongla-Khulna railway line and the construction work of the railway bridge being built on Rupsa river of Khulna.
