700 detained over clash with police: Home minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said more than 700 people were detained in connection with Saturday's (July 29) violence and clashes between law enforcers and BNP’s party leaders and activists.

Those who were not involved in violence will be released from the police station, he added.

The home minister said while speaking to journalists following his meeting with the four-member election monitoring team, led by US political analyst Terry L Isley, at the secretariat today (July 30).

On the other hand, police have so far arrested 149 leaders and activists of BNP in 11 cases filed against 469 named and many unnamed persons over clashes with law enforcers on July 29.

Earlier on July 29, BNP activists and law enforcers locked in a clash at different parts of the capital including Gabtoli, Dholaikhal, Matuail, Shyamoli, Jatrabari and other places while observing the sit-in programme to press home its demand for holding the election under a caretaker government.

On July 28, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that the party and the other like-minded opposition political parties would hold sit-in programmes at all the Dhaka entry points on Saturday from 11:00am to 4:00pm.
