Ruling Awami League (AL) candidate Mohiuddin Bachchu unofficially won the by-election for Chattogram-10 (Double Mooring-Halishahar-Khulshi) constituency on Sunday (July 30).

Jubo League Chattogram City unit former Convener Bachchu defeated his nearest candidate Md Shamsul Alam of Jatiya Party by a margin of 51,351 votes.

The election Returning Officer (RO) and Chattogram Regional Election Officer Md Hasanuzzaman announced the result from the announcement centre at Gymnasium of MA Aziz Stadium in the city’s Kajir Dewri area on Sunday night.

Among the total 156 polling centres, Bachchu (boat) bagged 52,923 votes while Shamsul (plough) 1,572 votes.

Besides, Trinamool BNP candidate Dipak Kumar Palit bagged 1,230 votes with golden fibre symbol while Bangladesh Sanskritik Muktijot candidate Rashid Mian 579 votes with cane, independent candidates Md Arman Ali 480 votes with ‘balloon’ and Manjurul Islam Bhuiyan 369 votes with ‘rocket’ symbol.

A total of 11.70 per cent votes were cast in the polling against the total number of 488,633 voters, said the RO.

The polling was held peacefully with Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

The number of voters was thin since the morning while no unpleasant happening was reported.

AL candidate Bachchu cast his vote at New Tigerpass Government Primary School centre at around 8:15am.
Expressing his satisfaction over the overall electoral environment, the candidate said that the election was held in a fair manner.

He also said that his party-men worked hard to bring the voters to the polling centres.

On the other hand, independent candidate Md Arman Ali boycotted the election bringing allegations of irregularities.

He alleged that he withdrew his candidature from the polls as his polling agents were obstructed from entering the polling centres.

However, Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Mostafizur Rahman of the concerned Pahartali police station denied any such incident.

“No such incident took place and no complaint was lodged in this connection,” he added.

Mentionable, Chattogram-10 constituency consists of the wards no 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 24, 25 and 26 of the Chattogram City Corporation.

Veteran AL leader Dr Afsarul Ameen won the seat thrice in a row.

The seat fell vacant after Afsarul passed away due to lung cancer on June 2 this year.
