Secretary General of the July Smriti Foundation, Sarjis Alam, has said that universities are not the place for party-based politics, and instead, student union elections should be held to represent students’ interests.
He made the remark on Thursday (Nov 7) during a gathering at the Noor Hossain Hall field of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University (HSTU).
The event was titled “Upholding the Spirit of the July Revolution and the Role of Revolutionary Students in State Reconstruction.”
Sarjis Alam said, “We aim to create representatives, not ‘leaders’ who lose touch with reality. In the past 16 years, those who became leaders failed to stay grounded. We do not want such leaders. If we want to build politically aware youth and create future leaders from North Bengal, then we must hold student union elections annually.”
He emphasized that if the university wants to produce the next generation of leaders like Maulana Bhashani, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, or Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, then student union elections are essential to foster true leadership.
The gathering was moderated by HSTU student Sanjida Parvin Ripa. Central coordinators Tariqul Islam and Abu Sayeed Leon, along with HSTU students Md Sujon Rana and Tofazzal Hossain Tapu, were also present.
