The Local Government Division is currently awaiting a court verdict before proceeding with the oath-taking of Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), as the matter remains pending in the Supreme Court.
In a statement issued on Tuesday (May 27), Md Salahuddin, Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, confirmed the development.
According to the statement, the Law Branch of the Local Government Division had earlier informed that all administrative preparations were completed following the High Court’s dismissal of Ishraque Hossain’s initial writ petition seeking to be sworn in as DSCC mayor.
However, on May 25, Ishraque filed a fresh writ petition with the High Court, once again seeking permission to take the oath. The following day, on May 26, a private citizen lodged a petition for leave to appeal in the Appellate Division, challenging the High Court's dismissal of Ishraque’s earlier plea.
As a result, the matter is now under judicial consideration by the Supreme Court. The Local Government Division said it will not take any further steps until a final verdict is delivered.
Ishraque Hossain, a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader and mayoral candidate in previous elections, has been at the centre of legal disputes surrounding his eligibility and oath-taking, though the current case pertains strictly to the recent judicial developments.
