Afroza Abbas demands impartial city polls

DHAKA: BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mirza Abbas’ wife Afroza Abbas demanded impartiality in upcoming city polls.

She made the demand while visiting makeshift poll campaign office in city’s Jatrabari area on Thursday morning.

Afroza, on behalf of her husband, made mass campaigns in Jatrabari, Sayedabad, Dhalpur, Mir Hazaribagh, Shyampur and the adjacent areas from 9:00am in the day.

She also distributed posters among the dwellers and requested to cast votes for Mirza Abbas.

However, the High Court on Wednesday gave a split-verdict on bail hearing in two violence cases against BNP leader Mirza Abbas.

The court also ordered the BNP leader could not participate in any campaign in the mayoral run.

Abbas pleaded for anticipatory bail release in three cases filed against him with Paltan Thana earlier on December 28 of 2014 under charge of setting fire to a bus, with Shahbagh Thana on March 6 of 2014 for corruption in distributing government plots and with Motijheel Thana on January 4 this year under explosives act.

Leaders and activists of local units of BNP and its affiliated organizations were accompanying Abbas’ wife. Tanti Dal leader, who was attending the polls campaign, told banglanews that the will continue meeting people today in these areas till afternoon.

Elections of Dhaka North and South city corporations as well as Chittagong City Corporation are set to be held on April 28.
