Attack on Mahi and his wife

DHAKA: Miscreants attacked the car of Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral candidate Mahi B Chowdhury at city’s Satrastha area on Saturday late night, leaving the Bikalpadhara Bangladesh leader, his wife and driver injured.

Mahi’s media cell chief coordinator Jahangir Alam told banglanews that the incident took place Saturday late night in front of a refueling station, adjacent to Bangladesh Government (BG) Press, in the area on the late night.

Injured Mahi, his wife Ashfa Haque Lopa and the driver were rushed to the city’s United Hospital, Jahangir added.

At the hospital, Mahi told the journalists that they were returning to their Baridhara residence after attending a television program. A group of miscreants, numbering 8/10 attacked his car on the road moments after they refilled oil in the car from refueling station.

The attackers broke front glass of the car, beat Mahi with stick and tried to drag him out of the car. He received injuries on left hand and left eye. They also broke the car’s backside glass, and hit Lopa with stick. However, the driver sustained injures on his right shoulder.

The Bikalpadhara leader informed that he was told on Saturday to step away from the city polls.

Mahi said the he was not certain who might have carried out the attack but conspiracy was hatching against him.

Asked whether his opponent either Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed candidate Tabith Awal or Awami League-backed Anisul Haque was involved in carrying out the attack, Mahi denied comment saying time would tell then.

However, government is responsible to ensure the security, Mahi added.

Mahi’s personal secretary Jahangir Chowdhury told that they went to Tejgaon industrial Thana to file a case at night in this connection.

But they were told to come at 9:00am on Sunday, he added.
