DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) constituted tribunal with the view to ease submitting allegations of irregularities in the recently held city corporations polls.
A gazette notification was issued on Monday regarding the constitution of the tribunal.
A joint district and session judge (Dhaka) comprises the election tribunal for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) while, an additional district and session judge and additional district magistrate (Dhaka) comprises the appellate division of the tribunal.
On the other hand, a joint district and session judge (Dhaka) comprises the election tribunal for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) while, an additional district and session judge and additional deputy commissioner (education) comprises the appellate division of the tribunal for DSCC.
Meanwhile, a joint district and session judge comprises the election tribunal for Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) while, an additional district and session judge and additional deputy magistrate (Chittagong deputy commissioner’s office) comprises the appellate division of the tribunal for CCC.
Any aggrieved candidate or their selected person can file cases with the tribunal against any irregularity.
However, according to election code of conduct, the candidate has to file case with the tribunal within 30 days of gazette notification.
The tribunal will settle the matter within 180 days of the case filing date.
The candidate can also go to the appellate division of the tribunal within 30 days of the verdict by the tribunal.
The appellate division will settle the matter within 180 days of the appeal date.
EC officials said the candidates can go to the tribunal for three reasons: to cancel the result of winner, to announce the candidate as winner and to ask for re-election.
