Sustainable dev impossible sans democracy

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in a meeting with the visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said the country lacks democracy which is a must for any country to ensure sustainable development.

BNP delegation led by its chairperson Khaleda Zia made the observation while paying the courtesy call on Narendra Modi at Hotel Sonargaon in the city on Sunday afternoon.

Dr Moeen Khan told the press about the summery of the discussion.

He said, “We discussed different issues including lack of democracy, Development of SAARC countries and young generation of the country.”

“Democracy is the first priority, then development. Sustainable development is impossible in any country sans democracy, he said.

Khaleda also lauded Modi’s emphasis on development in SAARC countries, Moeen added.

“People would not be befitted from the development if democracy is not existed in the country,” quoting Khaleda Zia, Dr Moeen Khan told media after the meeting.

During the meeting, Khaleda Zia also said no election can be held in free and fair manner without an impartial Election Commission.

Law and order situation in the country would not be improved if the administration along with its law enforcers cannot play their due roles impartially, Khaleda told Modi

The meeting began around 4:15pm and ended at 4:50pm.

BNP Standing Committee Members Tariqul Islam, Dr Abdul Moeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan and Chairperson’s Adviser Riaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed were also present at the meeting.
