DHAKA: The verdict on the review petition filed challenging the death penalty for war crimes convict Ali Ahsan Mujahid will be pronounced on Wednesday as the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court ended hearing on Tuesday.

A 4-member full bench of the Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha conducted the review hearing.

The other members were Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain.

Earlier in the day, the hearing of the review petition started at 9:10am. Defence lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain presented his arguments. Later, attorney general Mahbubey Alam presented his arguments from 11:00am to 12:00pm.

Listening to arguments of both parties, the Appellate Division fixed November 18 as the date to pronounce its verdict.

Earlier, on July 17 of 2013, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 handed down death sentence to Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Mujahid for his crimes against humanity during the country’s war of independence in 1971.

Later, he appealed against the verdict on August 11 of that year.

The Appellate Division upheld the ICT verdict against Mujahid on June 16.

The full verdict was published on September 30. Later on October 1, Dhaka Central Jail authorities read out the verdict to him.

On October 14, Mujahid submitted review petition of the verdict.
