Municipal polls face irregularities

DHAKA: BNP senior leaders, in a meeting with the foreign diplomats on Wednesday, alleged that the recent municipal elections faced irregularities including vote rigging. 

The meeting started at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office at 4:00pm and continued till 5:15pm.

BNP International Affairs Secretary Asaduzzaman Khan briefed the media after the meeting.

He further said the diplomats asked about our evaluation of the recently completed municipal polls.

In response to a question, the BNP spokesperson said they presented some documents to diplomats to substantiate their allegations.

Traditionally the diplomats do not make comments, he added.

A total of 14 diplomats including the United Nations Resident Coordinator Robert D Watkins, ambassadors of Sweden, Denmark and Turkey were present here.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was present here for a short time.

BNP standing committee member Dr Abdul Moin Khan, chairperson’s advisors Riaz Rahman, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Inam Ahmed Chowdhury and Sabihuddin Ahmed and Khaleda Zia’s special representative to Middle East Inamul Haque Chowdhury were, among others, present here.
