DHAKA: At least nine people were killed and scores injured in four districts in clashes during the first phase of union parishad, lowest tier of local government, elections and over ballot counting in four districts on Tuesday night (March 22).
Of the deceased, five were in Pirojpur, two in Cox’s Bazar, one in Netrokona and one in Sirajganj.
Pirojpur: At least five people were killed in a clash broke out during counting ballots at Sapa Degree College center at Dhanichapa union under Mathbaria upazila of the district.
The deceased were identified as Sohel, 25, Shahadat, 30, Kamrul Mridha, 25, Belal, 30 and Solayman, 20.
Mathbaria thana OC told Banglanews that a group of people swooped on the BGB men when they were carrying the ballot boxes from the Safa Degree College polling centre at Dhanisafa union.
Later, the BGB men opened fire to bring the situation under control leaving three of them dead on the spot.
Two injured succumbed to their injuries at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal.
Cox’s Bazar: Younger brother of Awami League’s rebel candidate Nurul Hossain died in a tripartite clash among supporters of AL candidate, AL’s rebel candidate and law enforcers during trying to snatch a ballot box at Boro Madrasa center of Mundar Para around 10:00pm.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Gafur, 30.
Witnesses said supporters of AL rebel candidate attacked police while they were taking ballot boxes to upazila auditorium.
Later, a tripartite clash broke out as supporters of AL candidate join, leaving Gafur bullet-hit.
He was taken to Teknaf upazila health complex where on-duty physicians declared him dead.
Teknaf Thana OC Abdul Majid confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Meanwhile, a youth died after sustaining bullet-injury during a clash between supporters of councilor candidates Nurul Amin and Selim at Ward-7 of Shahparir Dwip around 8:00pm.
The deceased was identified as Shafiq, son of one Dudu Mia, hailed from Majherpara of Shahparir Dwip and a supporter of Selim.
Netrokona: Golam Abu Kausar, 30, younger brother of AL chairman candidate Abu Ishaq, was killed in a clash during counting ballots at a center of 3rd Khaliajuri union under Khalijuri upazila of the district.
Netrokona additional super of police (crimes) Khan Mohammad Abu Naser confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Sirajganj: A woman was killed and five others injured in a clash between supporters of a winning and losing councilors at Joyanpur polling center of Dhangora union under Raiganj upazila of the district.
The deceased was identified as Naunai Begum, 45, wife of one Insab Ali, hailed from the area.
Raiganj Thana sub-inspector confirmed the matter to banglanews.
