DHAKA: The Supreme Court verdict that rejected death row war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami’s review petition was read out to him at Dhaka Central Jail on Monday (May 9) night.
Earlier the verdict reached at Dhaka Central Jail on Monday evening.
Five International Crimes Tribunal officials, led by deputy registrar Kesab Roy, carried the verdict to jail around 7:00pm here.
Senior jail super Zahangir Hossain received the verdict copy.
Sources said the jail authority will begin final preparations to hang Motiur Rahman Nizami for his crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.
Earlier, Supreme Court (SC) additional registrar Arunabh Chakrabarty carried the verdict copy to ICT around 5:07pm. later, the copy was sent Law and Home ministries. From there, the copy was sent to the jail around 6:45pm.
A copy of the verdict will also be sent to deputy commissioner, also district magistrate, of Dhaka.
Nizami has one option left. He can seek mercy from the President. If denied, the home ministry will sent a letter to the jail authority after finalizing the day of execution.
Earlier on the day, the four-member appellate bench, led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha signed the complete verdict around 3:15pm.
The 22-page complete verdict was published around 3:30pm.
On May 5, Appellate Division upheld death penalty to Nizami rejecting his review plea.
