BARISAL: An activist of ruling Awami League (AL) was chopped to death in front of a school in Faridpur union under Bakerganj upazila of the district on Saturday (June 11).

The victim was identified as Mahiduddin Hawlader, 45, hailed from Sonapur village of the upazila.

Deceased’s brother Shahjalal alleged that some local Jubo League leaders and also Faridpur UP Ward No 3 members including Mamun, Shawkat and Bashir chopped Mahiuddin indiscriminately in the area while he was returning home around 3:00pm, leaving him critically injured.

Being informed, Mahiuddin’s relatives rushed him to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead.

Dr Mamunur Rashid of the hospital said the AL activist died as his tendons were cut-off and injured by chopping with lethal weapons.

Bakerganj Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Azizur Rahman said Mahiuddin was killed over the internal party clash and to create supremacy in the area.

However, police has been investigating the matter to arrest the accused, the OC added.
