BNP takes part in Narayanganj city polls

DHAKA: BNP will take part in the impending elections of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), scheduled to be held on December 22.

The decision was made from a BNP’s standing committee meeting, presided over by party chief Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan political office on Thursday (November 17) night.

Meanwhile, the party also decided to boycott the polls in 61 district parishads.

Party’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was talking to journalists after the meting.

The leaders also decided to organize countrywide rallies on November 21 (Monday) protesting the arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia in a case filed over her celebration of birthday on August 15, Fakhrul added.

“We also discussed about our proposal to reform the election commission (EC) and enduring political situation in the country.”

Alleging that the NCC elections would not be free and fair, Mirza Fakhrul said, “It would be a farcical election. Despite this BNP will participate in the polls to continue the democratic process.”

He further said: “The results of district parishad polls have already been finalized. The election is going to be held like electoral system. People won’t cast their votes directly rather the elected representatives will cast votes. This is why BNP has decided to boycott the polls.”

Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Barrister Maudud Ahmed, Lt. Gen. (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Tariqul Islam, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, attended the meeting.
