DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday upheld the bail granted by the High Court (HC) to Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna in two cases including sedition.
The Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha, issued the order in response to a plea of the state.
The order also said Manna will be on bail till the police submit their report. Manna, however, will have to surrender his passport.
Lawyer Idrisur Rahman moved for Manna in the court while additional attorney general Murad Reza was the prosecutor.
On February 24, 2015, a case was filed against Manna for his alleged involvement with planning for a coup to overthrow incumbent government.
Later on March 5, a sedition case was filed against Manna, BNP vice-chairman Tariq Rahman, who is living in UK, and former mayor of Dhaka City Corporation Sadeq Hossain Khoka on the charge of plotting to dethrone government illegally.
HC granted bail to Manna in both cases upon his filing an appeal plea with the HC. Later, the state filed an appeal petition against the bail.
