JS polls under constitution, says PM Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday made it clear that the next parliamentary elections would be held as per the provision of the constitution within 90 days to expiry of parliament.

“As per the constitution, the present parliament will expire on January 24, 2014 and the elections will be held any day within 90 days before the expiry date,” she said.

During the time, the parliament will exist but no session will be held and the government will not take any decision on policy matters, she said.

The premier came up with the assertion in a meeting with secretaries at Bangladesh Secretariat in the city.

Sheikh Hasina also urged the top bureaucrats to study the process of transfer of power in parliamentary democracies so they can perform their duties properly during the interim period.

Cabinet Secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed reporters over the outcome of the meeting at the cabinet room of the secretariat.

The cabinet secretary also said the premier also discussed the ways to improve governing system and different development activities.
