DHAKA: Former Health Minister and also Awami League presidium member Mohammed Nasim lost the battle for life in a city hospital after nearly eight days’ treatment.

He breathed his last around 11 am on Saturday (June 13) at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Bangladesh Specialized Hospital at Shyamoli. He was 72.

Awami League leader Biplab Barua informed the matter to Banglanews.

The former health minister suffered a stroke in the early hours of Friday after contracting the coronavirus. Later, he underwent a surgery on emergency basis.

He also tested negative for Covid-19 for the second and third times.

Mohammed Nasim had been acting as the convenor for the 14-party ruling alliance built around the heft of Awami League.

Nasim, the son of M Mansur Ali, one of the four national leaders killed in jail on Nov 3, 1975, had also served as home minister for the Awami League government in 1996.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina subsequently appointed him as health minister during her government’s next tenure.
