No space for AL in next polls: Mahfuj Alam

Adviser to the Interim Government, Mahfuj Alam, today said that the Awami League (AL) would not be allowed to participate in the upcoming general election, warning that their involvement could pave the way for the return of fascism to Bangladesh's politics.

Speaking at a meeting in Hajiganj upazila, Mahfuj accused AL of suppressing democratic movements, referencing the 1975 establishment of BAKSAL by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which he claimed led to the forced disappearance and persecution of opposition figures.

He further criticized the party's actions during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina, alleging widespread human rights abuses, including abductions, rapes, and killings.

Mahfuj emphasized the need for reforms in state institutions that he argued were used by the Hasina government to oppress citizens, stressing that a fair election could only take place after necessary institutional reforms.

He also reiterated the interim government's commitment to bringing those responsible for violence to justice and ensuring a democratic transition.

Earlier, Mahfuj Alam was warmly received by local leaders and residents in Hajiganj, with a procession organized in his honor. He is scheduled to attend a civic reception at Ramganj Government College in Lakshmipur later today.
