AL pays tribute to August 21 grenade attack victims

The Awami League has paid tribute to the victims of August 21 grenade attack by placing wreaths at a makeshift memorial built in front of Awami League’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka.

On behalf of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, party General Secretary Obaidul Quader placed the wreath at the makeshift memorial, built in memory of the victims of the grenade attack, on Saturday morning.

Later, top leaders of the party paid tribute to the victims placing wreaths at the memorial.

Subsequently, other leaders and activists of AL, its associate bodies and other political bodies placed wreaths at the altar in front of the party's central office at Bangabandhu Avenue here.

Due to the pandemic, a limited number of programmes will be held to commemorate the day.

On August 21, 2004, a deadly grenade attack was carried out at an anti-terrorism rally of Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka.

The attack killed 24 people, including the then president of Bangladesh Mohila Awami League and late President Zillur Rahman's wife, Ivy Rahman, and injured over 500 others.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the then the opposition leader, narrowly escaped with severe injuries from the attack.
