HC directives sought for Khaleda’s oversees treatment

A writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking its directives on the government so that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia can travel abroad for advanced medical treatment.

Supreme Court lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond submitted the public interest litigation (PIL) plea on Monday, arguing that there was no bar to allow the former prime minister to go abroad on humanitarian grounds in line with the Section 401 (1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

The writ petition will be placed before the court on Tuesday for a hearing, Akond said.

The BNP has been demonstrating for the past few weeks demanding its chief to be allowed to go overseas for treatment.

The 76-year-old former prime minister is now undergoing treatment in Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital. She is out of jail through a government executive order suspending her sentence in a graft case.

Her family filed petitions to allow her to travel abroad for treatment, but the government said that she must return to jail first to apply for permission.

On November 28, her doctor Dr. Samsul Arefin said that she was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and there is no treatment for this disease in the country.
