Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has suffered another injury during net practice, adding to a series of recent misfortunes.
The 36-year-old was bowling in the nets when batsman Mitchell Owen struck a powerful return shot that fractured Maxwell’s arm.
Maxwell’s history of injuries includes a fractured leg in 2022, when a friend fell on him at a 50th birthday party, and a concussion sustained after falling from a golf cart during the 2023 World Cup.
The latest setback rules him out of Australia’s three-match T20 series in New Zealand this week. Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe has been named as his replacement for the series.
Matthew Short, an Australian all-rounder who was batting in a neighbouring net at Mount Maunganui, described the incident to cricket.com.au: “I saw [Owen] smoked it and then the aftermath. It hit Maxi on the wrist. It didn’t sound good. [Owen] is not the guy you want to be bowling to in T20 training, that’s for sure.”
Maxwell’s participation in a five-match one-day international series against India at home in October is now uncertain.
Short added: “Maxi’s been there and gone through [serious injuries] a couple of times now. He was a bit disappointed but it’s just like any other injury. I’m sure he’ll get through it.”
