1 killed, 10 injured in Rajshahi clash

RAJSHAHI: A man was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two groups of people over catching fish in a disputed swamp (beel) in Bagmara upazila of the district on Thursday evening.

The deceased was identified as Ashraful Islam, 35, son of Jabed Ali, hailed from Khamarpara village of the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bagmara Thana, Abdul Hamid told banglanews that there was a long standing clash between two groups over the swamp locally known as ‘Khoirar Beel’.

Sources said Asraful Islam along with some fishermen went to the disputed swamp to catch fish.

On information, the leaser of the swamp rushed in and forbade Asraful to catch fish, sources added.

At one stage, both the groups locked into a fierce clash with arms and local weapons, leaving 11 persons, including Ashraful, injured.

On way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, critically injured Ashraful Islam succumbed to his injuries.

Additional police forces were deployed in the area to avert further untoward situation, OC added.
