DSA: DUJ condemns charge against RTV correspondent

Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) expressed deep concern over RTV staff correspondent Yeasmein Akter's (Adhora) case under the Digital Security Act (DSA) for reporting the misdeed of the 'Pir' Syndicate in the capital's Rajarbagh.

A statement was issued in this regard by DUJ president Sohel Haider Chowdhury, and General Secretary Akhter Hossain on Tuesday (July 11).

According to the statement, Even though the Digital Security Act has been enacted to protect sensitive matters of the state, journalists are becoming its targets.

Journalists are being harassed in the name of DSA, the statement said.

DUJ has always been adamant about the demand to cancel the exclusionary clause of journalists in the Digital Security Act, the statement added.

DUJ leaders in the statement said the law minister has repeatedly promised the safety of journalists, but its reflection is not seen in reality. On the contrary, journalists are being harassed and tortured under the Digital Security Act in various ways.

The Union condemns Yeasmein Akter's charge and demands immediate cancellation of the clauses that harass the journalists, the statement said.

The statement added more saying DUJ is always uncompromising against any action of digital security act or any other form of harassment of journalists.

Earlier, RTV staff reporter Yeasmein was sued under the Digital Security Act (DSA) for publishing news regarding the 'Pir' Syndicate in the capital's Rajarbagh.

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, Shakerul Kabir, leader of the 'Pir' Syndicate, filed a case against the reporter at the Chattogram Cyber Tribunal.
