An elderly woman and her granddaughter were killed after being hit by a train at Parbatipur upazila in Dinajpur district on Saturday (August 19) morning.

The accident occurred around 10.30pm at Namapara rail bridge of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Marjina Begum, 60, wife of late Abdul Majid, and her granddaughter Sathi akhter, 6, both hailed from Ranirbandar Bhusirbandar area under Chirirbandar upazila.

According to the deceased family and locals, Marjina Begum and Sathi along with their other family members went to Huglipara village of the upazila to attend a relative's wedding. 

In the morning, Marjina was walking along the railway line with her granddaughter Sathi and two others. At that time, while the four were crossing the Tilai river railway bridge, two of them jumped into the river and survived. But the duo died after being hit by Dhaka bound Duranta Express train.

Parbatipur Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Nurul Islam confirmed the matter to Banglanews.
