Two people were killed as a mortar shell from Myanmar struck in the Jalpaitali area of Ghundhum Union under Naikhyangchhari upazila of Bandarban on Monday noon (February 5).
On Sunday around 11 pm, a fierce gunfight started on the Ghundhum border in Bandarban’s Naikhyangchhari upazila centering the Dhekiboniya BGP post inside Myanmar.
The deceased were identified as Hosne Ara Begum (55), wife of Badsha Mia from Jalpai Tali village, and Nabi Hossen (65), a Rohingya resident of the Block 8-E of Balukhali Refugee Camp.
Ghumdhum Union Chairman AKM Jahangir Aziz confirmed the matter to Banglanews.
He said Nabi was employed as a labourer in the paddy fields near Hosne Ara's house. He was inside Hosne Ara's house to have lunch. Both of them died as the mortar shell hit the kitchen.
According to the locals, the gunfight stopped at around 8:00 am on Monday.
Since the fighting erupted between government troops and rebels in Myanmar, a total of 95 members of Myanmar's paramilitary force, the Border Guard Police (BGP), have so far sought refuge in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh (BGB) has taken them in for safe shelter after disarming them, said a press release from the BGB headquarters in Dhaka.
